Here’s how to make the most of a layover in Copenhagen
By Cristina & Kelly
Copenhagen is where design and recreation are seamlessly woven into daily life, where biking is the default, and where a swim in the harbor is as casual as grabbing coffee.
If Yardsale were a city, it would be Copenhagen. Everything is impeccably designed, yet nobody takes themselves too seriously. Whether you like going on long, flat runs, prefer a day laying out by the water, or enjoy a top-tier art and design scene, we truly believe Copenhagen has something for everyone.
We spent two days here before our FW25 photoshoot in Norway, chasing both sides of what makes this place unique — the outside adventures that keep the city moving, and the inside places with beautiful design, excellent food, and of course, Scandinavian hygge. Naturally, the new Day Bag came along for it all. It carried towels, wet swimsuits, our computers, wallets and passports, cameras, and several cardamom buns.
We split this recap in two: everything we recommend doing outside in Copenhagen, and our favorite bars, restaurants, and museums to check out when you're ready to head inside.
Copenhagen's outside gems
Take advantage of the plentiful bike lanes
Aside from Amsterdam, Copenhagen has the most bikes per capita out of any city we've ever been to. And there's a reason! Though the public transit is actually quite good, bikes are the most convenient way to get around all of the different neighborhoods. The city is completely flat, there are bike lanes (and bikers) on every road, and there's ample bike parking for wherever you end up. We snagged two bikes from our hotel, but there are rentals you can pick up on practically every street.
Swimming on the docks at Paper Island
The locals don't think twice about it, so neither did we. When the sun’s out, you swim. We lucked out with back-to-back 75-degree days and took full advantage of the sunny weather and warm, clean water. We jumped in at both Papirøen and Ofelia Plads across the harbor.
Take a GoBoat around the canals
This is touristy, yes, but also one of the best ways to see Copenhagen's canals without hopping on a huge tour boat. We picked up some lunch and rented a GoBoat for an hour to cruise around at our own pace.
Grab a post-swim burger at Gasoline Grill
Any great day outside ends with a burger. Since there's no inside seating at the original gas station location, a stop at Gasoline Grill counts as an outside activity. The burger and novelty 100% lives up to the hype.
Marvel at CopenHill
A clean energy power plant on the inside, a ski slope and climbing wall on the outside. Only Copenhagen could dream up something like CopenHill. We didn’t have time to ski or climb but we took a quick spin around on our bikes before heading off to dinner.
What to do inside
Stroll around the iconic Designmuseum
When the city itself feels like a design case study, visiting the Designmuseum is like seeing the blueprint behind it all. We ducked inside for inspiration and explored exhibits that echoed the same balance of form and function we try to design into our gear.
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
Just north of Copenhagen is another stunning museum. Sadly, we didn't have time to make the pilgrimage on the train or bike this trip, but the Louisiana Museum is one of those rare “inside” experiences that still feels outdoorsy. With several indoor-outdoor exhibits and beautifully kept grounds, it's a welcome half-day escape from the city.
Breakfast at Lille Bakery
Lille Bakery is hands-down the can't miss spot if you only have one day in Copenhagen. A short bike ride from the city center, it was our first stop after landing off a red eye at 7 am. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu but be sure to step upstairs before you leave to see the bakers in action from above.
Other quick recs
Wine bars and restaurants
For great cocktails, go to Bird. For a big natural wine selection and an excellent meal to accompany it, go to Bottega Barlie. If you want even more natural wine, go to lille blå vin bar or Bar Vitrine. For breakfast or lunch, we loved Atelier September and Apotek 57. For cardamom buns, you have to visit Juno The Bakery or Hart Bageri, and if you're looking for a fully gluten free bakery, visit H.U.G. Last but not least, for the most expensive cold brew you'll ever purchase, visit La Cabra. (It was $9.)
Shops
While we didn't spend too much time shopping, the HAY Design store is definitely worth the visit.
Hotels
We stayed at the 25Hours Hotel Paper Island and it was excellent. The bikes were great, restaurant was fantastic, and the location was perfect.
